About the Journal

The EGI regular open-access scientific publication aims to create a space dedicated to sharing multidisciplinary research on writing systems, written symbols, and scripts, with a particular focus on the role of graffiti. We believe that the scholarly recognition of graffiti (demonstrated in several of our publications) fosters a favorable environment for a deeper understanding of writing. This provides an opportunity to decipher content that may initially appear marginal but can become central to a better understanding of manuscript cultures.

The interpretation of graffiti (even within the specific context of manuscript culture studies) varies depending on the perspectives of those studying it, such as documenters (e.g., archaeologists) and interpreters (e.g., epigraphers). We aim to consider not only historical but also contemporary graffiti and how it may influence the formation of today’s and future (visual) languages. We envision a space where iconography and epigraphic studies, both official and unofficial inscriptions, can converge for common purposes.

Our objective is to create common ground for studying unofficial written material, providing a fresh perspective. This includes offering space for taxonomical and conceptual stabilization, as well as fostering discussions between well-established disciplines and opening the door to new fields and experimental approaches.
